Friday Question: Promoted from the comments

A couple of weeks ago, I asked for YOUR questions. On account of laziness. Now that I'm hosting Weekend America, Fridays are actually fairly insane.

Cara suggested:
What piece of clothing have you owned the longest, and what is the story behind it?

Good one.

Me, I've been on a purge binge what with two moves and all. So at the moment, and Conservatize Me readers alone will know this one, it's the Puffy America shirt.

How about you?

a flowery yellow/green/fuscia paisley shirt bought during the Paisley Revolution of the mid-80s (with bands like The Three O'Clock and Prince's Around the World in a Day playing on my cassette player). My wife only allows me to take it from the closet once a year to admire it. I can see her hungering for it... to be scissored and torn up into rags. And thus I return it to the closet quite quickly.

I have a skirt and blouse that I bought at The Limited with my own money when I was Junior High. I still wear it all the time. It's patterned, so you can't see the stains from when I'd wear it to the pottery studio.
I also still wear a teal t-shirt from Hobson's Choice, a play from my first semester of high school, in which my best friend and I were cast as sisters. On the back, it says "Bumptious"; Suzy's shirt said "Uppish" -- that's how our characters were described. Ah, memories...

Hmm...Owned or wear? I used to have some Hawaiian shirts that I got in high school, but I'm pretty sure they finally found their way to GoodWill. I've got a lacrosse jersey from my freshman year in college, but I don't wear it.

Probably the oldest thing that I've worn recently is a Boy Scout uniform shirt I got in 1985. It still fit, so when I started volunteering with Logan's Cub Scout Pack I just changed the patches and was good to go.

Scott Chicken: how old is your chicken suit?

Oh. Whoops. Clown suit. Free Range Chickens, circa 1995.

Two items pushing the 20 year mark... a college sweatshirt that I wore until the point of embarrasment, and a never-worn t-shirt that was silk-screened with the tiny faces of all classmates from my semester abroad.

a pair of men's gray sweatpants my mother bought for my seventh grade gym wardrobe exactly 20 years ago. they were long ago demoted to pajamas, then languished in a bottom drawer for a couple years while i gained and lost 20 pounds. the elastic is dead, the drawstring went missing, and now they're held up by four strands of cotton twine knotted together at the ends. they're comfy and warm and i'm happily wearing them right this minute.

A t-shirt that I bought at Marshall's to wear to a beach-themed dance freshman year of high school. It even says copyright 1985 on it so everyone can how old it is/I am. The shirt's about twice as wide as me, being from the 80's. It's also quite thin, being 23 years old, so I don't wear it much anymore. But it's still my theoretical favorite t-shirt.

BD, the chicken suit is vintage late '90s. Well younger than both the scout shirt and the lacrosse jersey. And much more sweat-stained.

I thought of this question after receiving a box in the mail from my mother. The box contained a pink and green floral dress with silver buttons, which I wore every chance I could get when I was around 3-4 years old. I would never have remembered it, but I recognized it instantly and it brought on a wave of nostalgia. Obviously I won't be wearing it anymore. Perhaps I'll make a hanky out of it.
The oldest item I still wear is a "Lion Coffee" t-shirt purchased in Hawaii,in 1985. It's very faded and has worn thin from all the washings, so it's super soft. I only wear it when I'm doing house-related labor, or when I'm sick and need comfort clothes.

I have a sweatshirt from 1994 that is tattered and was purchased during the coldest snowiest winter I have lived through in Ohio during an impoverished internship. It is the most comfortable sweatshirt and is saved only for gardening and illness. Though I have used it as a pattern for sweaters that I have knit. So most of my new favorite sweaters are just fancy copies of the old tattered sweatshirt.

Jensens here.
Andy: baseball jacket and Bobby Murcer t-shirt. Child size 10-12, which gives you an idea of its vintage. Andy says "He was the first baseball player I saw hit a home run when Murcer played for the Chicago Cubs. Best 10th man in baseball. On business travel, my Dad brought me patches for my jacket from different teams."

Nancy: Bill Rodgers blue polypro running tights. "They're old but keep me warm in the winter. Bill Rodgers won the Boston Marathon several times in the 1970's, in case you're wondering who he is."

Elizabeth: the split pants and sweatshirts she was wearing when we got her at the CCAA. She remarks "Mama running clothes smell bad." (really)

"ALEXANDRIA, VA AUTUMN 10K RUN t-shirts" from 1983 and 1984 -leftover from when my dad ran. Not only are the designs great but they say something like "Shooter McGee's Medicinal Tonic" or something on the back with this great sponsor logo

hey-! wow, just looked it up- Shooter McGee's Delectables & Cure-alls still exists apparently... logo is a bit different now...

Two hand knit sweaters. One an aran sweater knit by my grandmother for my mother. When I graduated from college, I knit one for my dad. The other is a cotton sweater I was told to retire years ago. It's boxy, boat neck, with some very 80's geometrics. It has 3 different pattern stitches, which was very French, thus very cool at the time. I adore that sweater.

In college, my party trademark was hand knit sweaters. It was the era of the Cosby sweater, so there was no shaping = easy to knit in class or while skipping class watching trashy tv.

A Beer Nuts shirt from the Beer Nuts factory in Bloomington, IL, where I went to college. You can barely read the "Beer Nuts" silkscreen, and the shirt has holes near the collar. It's so thin now it's barely wearable. But I love it so and can't part with it.
