What just happened?
A co-worker walked by me and said, "Hi Todd!" I said hi in return but I didn't call her by name because I didn't know her name.
Well, of course he called you Todd. All of us (your co-workers of a certain age) want to call you Todd, John. Years ago, and I mean years, because this is public radio, we had a newscaster called Todd Moe. He moved to New England about a decade ago, but everyone with the last name of Moe must be called Todd. He is a great guy. You should feel complimented. I would. No one EVER calls me Todd.
Good question. It's not like you can take it too personally since you forgot her name, too.
I had a similar dilemma with a small-ish child. 6 year old greeted me by the wrong name. He then told me all about how I came to his bday party, etc. so he clearly knew who I am. I think b/c I'm a teacher and a witch I corrected him. Was that mean?
"Hi Jerry" would have given you the upper hand.

Generally, when people share greetings, everyone wins.. unless the greeting is accompanied by an insulting nickname, I suppose.
